An Xbox VR headset is Coming to blow to Your Mind

Limited Edition of Xbox VR Headset

Microsoft has teamed up with Meta to create a limited-Edition Meta Quest VR headset that's "Xbox-inspired." While neither Microsoft nor Meta have shared full details about this VR headset, it sounds like it's simply a skinned Meta Quest 3 (or a future unannounced version) that comes with an Xbox controller.

"We're partnering [with Microsoft] once again to create a limited edition Xbox-inspired Meta Quest," says Meta in today's announcement. It is part of Meta, which is opening up its operating system that powers Quest VR headsets to third-party hardware manufacturers. Asus and Lenovo are making dedicated headsets with the Meta Horizon operating system, but the partnership with Microsoft sounds like it's only going to be a limited-edition headset - similar to how Microsoft makes limited-edition Xbox consoles.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says in an Instagram post that the version of the headset discussed today "comes out of the box with Xbox controllers and Game Pass, so you can start playing on the big screen right away, wherever you are."

Microsoft has had a mixed history with VR headsets on the Xbox side, which led to the company recently teaming up with Meta. A leaked document in 2012 detailing plans for the Xbox One revealed that Microsoft was considering Kinect glasses codenamed Project Fortaleza. These never came to life with the launch of the Xbox One console, but Microsoft then created a more powerful version of the Xbox One X that was supposed to be VR capable.

"We designed it to be something that could be plugged in and work," Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in 2016 about VR support for Project Scorpio, codenamed Xbox One X. The Xbox One X never had a VR headset. support, even though the company ships its Xbox One controllers with the Oculus Rift.

After the demise of Microsoft's failed Windows Mixed Reality efforts, the company eventually turned to a closer partnership with Meta. Quest owners can now use Word, Excel and PowerPoint in VR, and Microsoft and Meta also teamed up to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to Quest VR headsets last year.
